Established in the mid-1990s, Oserengoni Wildlife Sanctuary provides a vital safe haven for wildlife in its 18,000-acre expanse. Surrounded by an electrified fence, the sanctuary protects resident animals from outside threats while preventing them from straying onto neighboring farmlands.
Wildlife corridors link the sanctuary with the neighboring Hell's Gate National Park and the lakeshore. These corridors facilitate free movement of animals throughout the ecosystem, promoting biodiversity and overall ecological balance. Since the sanctuary and wildlife corridors were created, populations of species like leopards and giraffes, once in decline, have rebounded to healthy levels
Oserengoni Wildlife Sanctuary maintains a healthy population of predators such as leopards, hyenas, jackals, and serval cats. To ensure a balanced ecosystem, we are committed to enhancing the sanctuary's fence with predator-proofing measures. These efforts will facilitate natural population control of herbivores.
The sanctuary and game corridors teem with life, boasting over 50 species of mammals. Visitors can encounter, Leopard, Grevy’s zebra, Impala, Serval Cat, Warthog, Lesser Galago and many more. Additionally, Naivasha's unique location makes it a major migratory bird stop and key breeding ground. With over 400 bird species present year-round, Klaas’s Cuckoo, Long-crested Eagle, Spectacled Weaver and Black-backed Puffback.
OUR CLIMATE
O.W.S is located in the Great Rift Valley and surrounded by the two escarpments, the Mau and the Aberdares, with Lake Naivasha and Lake Oloidien in between.
Our yearly annual rainfall is around 700mm
Naivasha has a very comfortable climate as we are not far from the equator. Average temperatures range from 10C (50F) to 29C (85F).
Naivasha is a dryer area and there humidity is around 50% for most of the year and going up by around 10 - 15% towards the rainy months.
The altitude in the Oserengoni Wildlife sanctuary ranges from the lowest of 1894mts (6214ft) to the highest of 2076mts (6844ft).
